So what body type are you? Once you work it out you will be able to best tell what you need to be doing in order to get the body you deserve.
There are 3 main types of body shape or somatotype; ectomorph, endomorph and mesomorph.
Many of us have characteristics of different categories, but one is usually the more dominant. For example you may be 70% mesomorph and 30% ectomorph.
Read on to discover what body type you are.
The Ectomorph or the Skinny Guy
The ectomorph is typically the skinny guy (often called hard gainer) who is able to eat a ton of junk food without gaining any fat.
They usually have low body fat and find it incredibly difficult to gain muscle.
If you are an ectomorph and are looking to put on lean muscle then your diet is incredibly important, you will need to eat a lot, in particular protein and carbs.
As for your training I would suggest that you keep cardio to a minimum and to focus more on the weight training.
Try to perform 3 sets of 8-12 reps with a moderate to heavy weight around 3-4 times a week. Focus in particular on the big compound lifts like the squat, deadlift and bench press as they will work more of your muscle groups.
The Endomorph or the Short Stocky Guy
The endomorph is the opposite of the ectomorph and is typically the shorter and more stocky looking guy, although not always as an endomorph can also be tall and stocky too.
Those classed as an endomorph will find gaining muscle easy, but are also prone to gaining fat too.
For endomorphs to burn fat you should focus on cardio, but not steady-state cardio but rather HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training.
During HIIT you will perform 30 seconds of intense cardio, followed by a short rest. You will then continue.
You should also continue to lift the weight to maintain your muscle mass. 3 sets of 12-15 reps 4-5 times a week with a moderate to heavy weight should result in some good results.
The Mesomorph or the Athletic Guy
The mesomorph is the naturally athletic guy we all hated in school. He was brilliant at all the sports and had a six pack at 16.
When you look at most fitness models they are mesomorphs and they are lucky enough to be able to gain muscle and lose body fat seemingly at will.
Basically, these are the lucky guys, so if you are one of them I am jealous.
As a mesomorph you will need to push your physique to keep it at tip-top condition, so you will still need consistent and challenging exercise despite your strong genetics.
You should lift heavy weights 3 times a week, 3 sets of 5-10 reps. HIIT is also recommended to help keep off the fat.
Now that you know what different types of body type there are, perhaps you will have a better understanding of your own body type and how best to improve it.
