Illegal Bodybuilding Supplements: The Risks

Illegal Bodybuilding Supplements

Last Updated on

When it comes to performance-enhancing drugs, there are many reasons why some of them are banned.

One of the main reasons is the serious health risks that they pose, a warning that many people unfortunately choose to ignore.

But it’s much more than that; illegal bodybuilding supplements also often give an unfair advantage to some athletes. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular products, as well as some of the risks associated with banned supplements in the bodybuilding industry.

Illegal Steroid Use

Anabolic steroids are among the most commonly used illegal supplements among bodybuilders and athletes.

It is estimated that as many as six million people in the United States alone are illegally using steroids. The majority of these people are average individuals who are looking to build their physique, and they are willing to risk the side effects with the hopes of achieving success.

Most of these supplements contain testosterone, specifically synthetic types of testosterone, and although testosterone is legal to purchase with a prescription, it is illegal to use for non-medical purposes like gaining lean muscle mass.

Here are some of the risks involved in taking illegal bodybuilding supplements:

  • Liver abnormalities
  • Acne and other skin conditions
  • Premature baldness
  • Increased LDL cholesterol
  • Infertility
  • Shrunken testicles
  • Psychiatric disorders
  • Hypertension and other heart conditions

Human Growth Hormone (HGH)

Human growth hormone is also referred to as gonadotropin, is a hormone that occurs naturally within the body.

HGH has been promoted as being a very effective shortcut for people wanting to build muscle, lose weight and recover quickly after an intense workout.

HGH is used legally for a variety of growth disorders, and even to slow down the aging process. Since HGH is difficult to obtain on the black market in its pure form, there are many scams making the rounds, especially online.

Many fly-by-night companies claim to provide “legal” HGH products, when in fact their products contain supplements that convert to HGH in the body. But beware – these supplements often contain so little of these proteins that it is not nearly as effective as it claims.

Taking HGH is not as dangerous to your health as illegal steroids, but still poses various health risks.

Some of the risks of taking HGH illegally include:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood cholesterol levels
  • Muscle weakness
  • Joint pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

Androstenedione is also an illegal hormone found in some supplements. It is often referred to as “andro” and is produced naturally within the body. It is converted into testosterone and other hormones.

Ironically ando is said to increase your muscle mass when in actual fact it doesn’t build any muscle at all. It mostly converts to oestrogen by the body.

Some of the risks associated with andro include:

  • Low sperm count
  • Acne and other skin conditions
  • Shrunken testicles
  • Baldness in women
  • Enlarged breasts in men

Erythropoietin (EPO)

Due to its popularity in the cycling world, EPO has been one of the most widely abused supplements in recent years. Although it is not used by bodybuilders very often, it’s mainly used by endurance athletes like long distance runners and cyclists. Since it works to increase the production of red blood cells, it is often used legally to treat kidney disorders.

EPO has many risks; since it increases blood production, it can lead to a stroke or a heart attack. Your veins can clog when there is too much blood, which is why this hormone is so dangerous to use. It is notoriously popular in endurance sports but has many risks associated with it.

Prohibited Supplements

If you are an athlete looking for effective results and are not sure what supplements are banned in the UK then I suggest that you visit the World Anti-Doping Agency and view their list of prohibited supplements. It’s a great resource for anyone wanting to find out which supplements are banned and possibly dangerous to your health.

Gym supplements are undoubtedly very popular, and they still continue to pique the interest of people looking to improve their physique. But instead of looking for a miracle solution that will in turn negatively influence your health, stick to the basic, proven methods to ensure that you look your best while always prioritising your health.
